What’s Hot ~ What’s not ~ in Kitchen Color & Design

We’re about half way through 2022 so it’s a great time to see what’s sticking in kitchen design right now. Some trends are humming along consistently as they have been for a couple of years and some newer trends are emerging.

Multi-toned kitchens

No, I’m not referring to the tuxedo look with white upper cabinets and another color below. Let’s consider that more or less over. I’m talking about a trio of colors that often includes black, white or beige and light wood tone. (In cases where it’s just two colors for cabinetry it’s usually the island base or a stand alone pantry that’s unique.)

Green cabinets ~ Kitchen Design Trends

With green the predominant Color for the Year for 2022 it’s no wonder that green cabinets, which have been on the scene for about 3-4 years, continue to dominate. Every type of green is fair game. We see light pistachio, mint, hunter, sage, blue green, yellow green, the whole gamut. It’s a refreshing look.

Blue too!

Blue became popular about a year before green but it’s still going strong. While dark blue is most prevalent, a slate grey-blue and now light blue, the newest trend, is being seen.

Materials and Finishes ~ Kitchen Design Trends

Two trends dominate the backsplash. One is the stone slab which, though seemingly modern, is often featured in country kitchens. The other is zelij tiles as well as ceramic tiles that are zelij look-a-likes. Zelij has been here for years but seems to be growing in popularity. And brass is still the finish to beat. It’s often unfinished or antiqued.

Soft whites, beiges and putty ~ Kitchen Design Trends

While the bright white kitchen will never wholly disappear it’s safe to say that warm, light neutrals like beige, light warm gray and putty dominate more now.

Outliers

Still, the bold ones venture into more unchartered color categories. Yellow and deep red are two original choices which buck the trends and look great.
