Warm Autumn Toned Paint Colors.
The 2023 paint colors trending for interiors are warm autumn hues…. plus dusty muted pink. Colors like bronze, bourbon, ochre, gold, adobe, orange and russet prevail. This is an iteration of recent color trends. In fact, all of the trends this year signal an evolution, not a revolution of year’s past. The tones are rooted in nature with a nod towards the explosion of deep saturated color that comes before the senescence of winter. Where last year’s trend highlighted green with its nod towards renewal, this year’s marks another point in the circle of life. And though 2022 was all about green it will not vanish in 2023. Sage and olive green, in particular, are still playing strong.
The Mark of “The Hand.”
Certainly this has been a focus for some years. Some creation by the maker, the craftsman, the artisan, continues to play a role as an antidote to the mass produced. Think of tadelakt and lime wash paint for walls, caning and rattan for seating, tables and lighting. There’s hand painted tiles and ceramic light fixtures. They all speak to the workmanship required to produce products seemingly one at a time. Tactility and irregularity implies the bespoke, the custom-made, the one-of-a kind. It’s a compelling fantasy.

Black accents.
Black accents applied to a single kitchen cupboard, an island base, some built-in shelving or bedside tables speak to the power of high contrast to create drama, even in an all neutral space. Yes, an entire kitchen of black cabinets has been around for a few years but black is being used more effectively right now in a room with mixed tones as an accent.

Arches.
Arched doorways and room entrances seem to be everywhere. Typical of a Tudor home they are appearing in homes of varied styles. They feel modern yet not modern at the same time. Often in rooms with plaster or plaster-like paint finishes. They’re frequently in neutral colored rooms.
Mediterranean Hand Painted Tiles.
Zelij ( zellige) tiles continue to trend, as do beautifully glazed vertically stacked subway tiles. But what seems to be popular right now are hand painted (or seemingly so) glazed terracotta tiles whose patterns owe a nod to Italy, France, Portugal, Spain or Morocco. The tile company Tabarka Studio is a leader here. As the tiles are often heavily patterned many designers are using them mostly in neutral colors. They definitely feel hand-made.

Ogee edge countertops and scrolled ogee backsplashes.
The marble is sometimes wild and dramatic with veining in colors like turquoise and purple and there’s a move from eased modern edge detailing to the more decorative and traditional ogee edge.

Kitchen seating: The Banquette.
I first went nuts years ago over a custom banquette designed by Amber Lewis. It was woven from wicker and upholstered in a raisin colored leather. She’s such a huge designer influencer I think she started the trend single-handedly. It’s everywhere now.
The Checkered Floor
Noted in my 2022 Design Forecast. It’s BIG. Checkerboard floors are everywhere. Black and white is classic but you’ll find them in many wonderful combinations like deep red and white and caramel and cream. Usually tiles, they can be stenciled on wood flooring too. Set on the diagonal is a must.

Mixed finishes in kitchens.
The most exciting kitchens today mix wood, often natural oak, with dark painted pieces that could be black, dark green, dark blue or dark gray with cabinets and counters that are white or off-white. Hardware is often brass and the look is warm and approachable.
