Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, HC-154
I remember I once spoke with a seasoned real estate broker many years ago and she said “you’re in trouble if the house you’re listing is painted blue. It doesn’t sell.” Whoa! Have things changed since then! (You can take that from me. I am also a Realtor!) Blue is ever-growing in popularity as an exterior house paint color and here’s why: Blue is the world’s favorite color. And homes with light blue bathrooms sell for thousands more too.
Dark exterior paint colors are still on an upward trend and there’s no doubt many people consider the best dark blue paint color for a house exterior to be Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy. Is it the best? Well, that’s subjective, but there’s no doubt it’s an appealing color. Hale Navy is actually a muted navy. It has a lot of black in it whilst still being easily identifiable as a blue. That lack of colorfulness makes it an elegant and subtle color. It doesn’t skew green and it doesn’t skew purple. If a blue could be a neutral then Hale Navy would be one. ( But don’t get me started on that. Blue is not a neutral). Paired with a white you get a crisp, appealing palette with Coastal leanings. Don’t go too bright and stark with the white. Look at toned down whites like Benjamin Moore’s China White and Cascade Mountains. You can also try Benjamin Moore Calm or Sebring White. Though you can add a bright color for the front door I prefer the simplicity of a medium tone wood stain. It’s really elegant.
Mid-Toned or Light Blue Exteriors
If you’re hankering for a light blue house it’s always appropriate for warmer locales. If you’re looking to create a Caribbean feel by using a more saturated mid toned blue it again is most suited for hot climates. But if you keep the blue a bit muted and toned down, even a light or mid-toned blue can work anywhere around the country. It’s just less common outside of the South.

Colors like Sherwin-Wiliams’ Dockside Blue and Aqua-Sphere fit the bill here. But keep the highly saturated blue colors for tropical homes.

Benjamin Moores’s Providence Blue is a beautiful mid to dark blue toned down by some grey. It’s really a slate blue-grey.

Another muted medium-dark winner is Benjamin Moore’s Knoxville Gray.

Blue Paint which works with Brick
Dark blues and green blues including teal work really well with red brick.
This is Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent with the darker SW Inkwell as accent color. Together they set off the red brick beautifully.

Here’s another great navy with just a bit of white as accent.
If you like more of a teal mix of blue and green consider Sherwin Williams Cascades which is a teal. Here it is paired with a warm creamy white.

Blues pair so well with many tones of wood stain that can be used as an accent on the house.

Many people lean towards using white trim but I have to say on the right architecture having the trim match the body of the house is a seamless look. This is Sherwin Williams Homburg Gray.
