Painting your home is a large investment which needs to last for years but changing your front door color can be done often to suit your needs and mood. It’s a great way to express yourself while adding whimsy to your overall exterior palette and advancing your curb appeal. Your exterior palette should align with your architectural style, geographic region and much more but fewer rules apply to choosing front door color. Obviously the colors have to work together well.
The home above is a deep blue black and I chose a mustard for the door. Here the contrast is created by the different hues, though the door is lighter in value as well. When a home is deeply colored I do not choose a very saturated color for the door. It’s just too contrasty.
Your home’s materials can help guide you towards the front door color.
I particularly like pastel colors with stone and light tan brick. People gravitate to bold door colors but often a soft color produces an elegant look.
Blues and Greens are popular front door choices which work with so many house body colors.
Where to place the Front Door Color.
I think it’s very important to place the door color only on the door itself and not on the door frame. Otherwise it looks like lipstick extending beyond the lip line. Not nice! Paint the door trim the same color as all the trim when it’s all one trim color. If there are multiple trim colors it’s usually a good route to use the window trim color for doors for a uniform overall look.
Here the teal is on the door and its frame because the intension was for the door to match all of the trim.
Try an unusual color to stand out.
I love salmon and orangey pinks for front doors. They work with so many colors like neutrals. blues, greens. browns, grays, etc.
Another unique choice is Eggplant or Aubergine as it’s called across the pond.
It’s a deep reddish purple. Sometimes it skews more blue -purple. It works with light colored homes and some darker colors as well. It’s lovely with many blue and green homes, earth tones and white of course.
It looks outstanding with this red brick.
No matter what you choose make sure you love it. The door is your sign of welcome. It invites your guests to come in. Whether you go for a stately black, which is said to increase your house value, or a bright orange, make sure it says you and have some fun!
