10 New Interior Design and Color Trends for 2025

2025 basketweave tile trend

This year finds us doubling down on paint color and design trends already hatched in years past and adding some new ones starting to take off. My favorite thing to do when pulling swipe to illustrate the newest color and design trends is to find a photo which epitomizes more than one trend. You see such above.

1. The hottest tile pattern is a variation on the basketweave pattern going into 2025

A basket weave used to look different but now it’s achieved by rotating your basic subway tile into small stacks of vertical and horizontals. You create a lot of pattern and visual interest by this treatment and it does not require expensive and/or hand made tiles to look great. The tiles above are the ubiquitous Zellige which come in a huge variety of gorgeous colors.

Here’s a variation of it.

2. Plum, Deep Red, Brown and Burgundy are the hottest paint and interior design colors for 2025

The tiles above exemplify this. Last year brown came roaring on the scene. Many paint companies chose a color like this for their Color of the Year and it’s all over Instagram. There are so many variations on these colors. They’re often hard to categorize by eye. They always look sensational in rooms with a lot of natural light or even a minimal  amount. They look best with matching trim. White trim is too bright and light and frankly passe. The colors are deep, dark, rich, complex and very warm.

3. Mustard and ochre yellows, on my list for 3 years now, is gaining fast.

We’re taught that warm colors increase hunger and are great for kitchens. That’s where we are seeing it most, either on walls or on cabinets.

The photo above brings us to trend number 4, checkerboard tile patterns.

4. The checkerboard tile pattern

There’s no doubt that the checkerboard floor has been hot for a few years but that optically dizzying pattern has been showing up in tiles for the bathroom.

5. Black Trim for 2025

Not for the faint hearted, this bold treatment for interior trim and molding looks great with a painted or wallpapered wall.

6. Rugs with graphic bold patterns

These incredible rugs are often the diva in the room asking the other decor elements to sit back and enjoy the ride.

7. Wallpaper surrounded by natural wood

It almost seems counterintuitive. The wallpaper being so decorative and sophisticated and the wood being so rustic. But the juxtaposition makes it exciting.

8. A shot of Lime or Chartreuse for 2025

There’s not doubt that since the pandemic green has been a design star being used in every place in the home as well as on exteriors. Well it’s not going away any time soon in any of its incarnations and this year this citrusy green is taking center stage or working in a supporting role.

9. Tiled fireplace surrounds

Fireplaces covered in tiles are being seen in every region of the country. Whether they’re patterned or solid, zellij or more ordinary glazed ceramics, they are complementing many different interior design styles.

10. Match your exterior trim color to the house’s body color

I’ve been flying this flag for years. It’s so elegant and serene and if you want more color on your house add it to your shutters, doors and windows.

See you next year for another round of trend forecasts.
