Dark Green Exterior House Colors

Neutral colors including white, gray and beige remain the most popular paint colors for house exteriors but there’s been a rising interest in using dark green paint colors on house exteriors. Using green settles the house into the landscape and is especially nice for a home sited near the woods. Greens, which are cool colors can sway towards the warmer spectrum being more yellow-green like olive or chartreuse or to the cool side with a visible hint of blue in their makeup. Those would include hunter, emerald and teal. The house above is painted with Benjamin Moore’s Backwoods with trim Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green.

Another great dark, more olive choice, is Sherwin-Williams Rock Bottom. It’s a very dark olive and pairs nicely with a dark trim color. Here the Fascia and Garage doors are Tricorn Black. Pairing a dark color for the body with a trim that’s dark as well looks amazing. A white-ish trim color on this house would greatly change the overall look, not for the best, in my opinion. If the window sashes were black it would look even better but many people have white vinyl windows.

Another Olive which works well is Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Olive. In this case the windows are black which allows the eye to seamlessly roam across the facade taking it all in as whole as opposed to being stopped at each window because of the harsh contrast between dark green and white.

This beautiful low country “cottage” mixes cedar shingles with Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green, a lovely deep green color to create a truly natural look.

This is Sherwin-Williams’ Jasper. Jasper is actually extremely dark but like any color, facing southern exposure, it will appear lighter. In the photo below the house is also Jasper. The home is located in Alaska. Note how much darker the green appears.

This new build in Asheville is in a community where the HOA limits how much contrast is allowed between trim and body colors. They really want the homes to become one with the forest. I specified Benjamin Moore Flora for the body and Black Night for the trim. The wood stain accents really add to the overall handsomeness of the house.
