The kids are back in school, the fall season with its apple picking and pumpkin carving is here so inevitably the holidays are upon us. Even if you weren’t thinking about redecorating your home you are cognizant that the least used room is about to get a workout. Are you panicking? Don’t! Jazz up your dining room by choosing the perfect dining room paint color.

Here’s how to choose dining room color.

My philosophy about dining room color is to let the architectural style and decor direction
of the whole home guide you. Homes which employ one overall theme should continue this theme into the dining room. The photo above is from a vintage farmhouse where all of the public spaces have white walls and wide decorative mouldings painted a glossy blue gray. The dining room was painted the same way to keep it as part of the cohesive whole.
Balance is really important when creating a color palette for a home. In the 90’s deep reds and hunter greens were popular for dining rooms. Deep saturated color is still fine for a dining room but make sure this type of color is not used in only one room of the house or it will feel unbalanced.

The dining room above is from a country home in the Berkshires where the main living space is a warm white and there is lots of millwork. To counterbalance the abundance of warm colored wood in the wide plank floors and elsewhere, the other rooms were painted a variety of cool blue or green toned grays. The dining room is in keeping with that palette.

This dining room is from a very large New York City apartment. Very bold color is employed throughout the home. The foyer and hallways are a deep red. Because such saturated colors are used in these rooms, many other rooms are pale neutrals to keep the apartment from becoming overwhelming and overstimulating. The goal is to achieve overall balance. For this apartment Benjamin Moore’s Van Deusen Blue is the perfect dining room paint color.

Color trends.

Benjamin Moore’s 2020 Color of the Year is First Light, a pale warm pink.  While I never endorse using a color just because it’s trending, a pale pink, warm or cool, is a delightful and unexpected color to use in a dining room. It will look luscious in candle light and will flatter all skin tones.

In a home where dining and living areas share a narrow long room, it’s usually best to employ one color. If the architecture lends itself to it, like in the apartment above, an accent wall can be used to signal the different function of a particular area.

In an open plan modern home where white is the color which unifies the whole space the perfect dining room paint color is white as well.

It is known that warm colors like red, orange and yellow spark the appetite. In addition, these colors are engaging and encourage conviviality and social interaction. They are wonderful to use in a dining room.
