Writing as an interior color specialist it’s that time of year that I forecast color and interior design trends for residences and I’m getting a jump on it this year. I am proud to say design pundits and shelter mags have consistently lagged behind identifying these concepts, reporting much later than I about new trends for the coming year. Like most years, some trends remain strong and carry on for longer than 12 months. This year those include, the use of pink, deep saturated wall color in hues like blue, green and teal, the use of caning in seating and case goods, dark green kitchen cabinets and the on-going love affair with light neutral spaces. So, what’s new in paint color for 2020?

My take on what’s new is the use of warm, autumnal hues in saturated tones. Yes blue and green are going strong but russet, brick red, orangey browns and the like are now on the rise in wall color and decor.

Based on colors from nature they will warm up any space creating exciting and inviting environments.

These colors are wonderfully “in between” and often resist categorization as one hue or another.

Medium blue kitchen cabinets – interior design trend.

Dark green and navy are still having their day but we’re beginning to see lighter blue cabinetry coming into view.

Beaded and reeded cabinets. Paneled and board & batten walls.

Textural wood is gaining popularity and we see it in kitchen and bath cabinetry as well as in wall coverings.

Cut out pulls – interior design trend.

Move over black, brass and polished nickel cabinet door pulls, geometric shaped cut out pulls are here and they’re great looking.

Bistro Shelving.

Brass fixtures have been hot for years and they’re aptly employed in today’s bistro shelving.

High loft, fluffy upholstery fabrics.

Plush, cushy, inviting. You can find these textiles available at all different price points. Even genuine shearling is being used as upholstery fabric.

Square, caged pendant lighting in any finish – interior design trend.

They’re large and usually have unshaded bulbs. These lights are gaining traction in kitchen and foyers.

A hint of mint – paint color trend.

All the greens have been strutting their stuff in the past year or so but mint seems to be having a moment.

Zellij Tiles

Hand made in Morocco. These tiles are glazed terra-cotta in beautiful colors. No two are alike and they’re applied without grout showing in between.
